LYNYRD SKYNYRD

SKU: S2-845362
Then And Now - featuring Johnny Van Zant sitting in for his dearly departed brother, Ronnie, might curl your britches. Former Outlaws guitarist Hughie Thomasson, along with guitarist Rickey Medlocke, background vocalists Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase, and a flurry of drummers and assorted players join original members Gary Rossington, Billy Powell and Leon Wilkeson for a collection that mixes a little of the old with the new - hence the title of the CD. Then And Now actually draws from three previous Skynyrd titles from the 90s - Live From Steel Town, Edge Of Forever and Twenty. No surprises here. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the definitive no-frills Southern Rock band. Then And Now captures the spirit of a band that shaped a movement, split for a decade, then reunited to take over Rock-n-Roll once more. This live disc features a "Simple Man" live video and an array of hits that have spanned and defined a generation.

Editorial Reviews
Most Lynyrd Skynyrd fans would agree that the band reached its creative peak in the '70s, but that doesn't mean that Skynyrd's '90s work is without merit. While it's true that the Southern rockers provided their most essential recordings in the '70s, Skynyrd's '90s lineups definitely had their moments in the studio, and their live shows continued to please die-hard fans. Released in 2000, Then and Now is an enjoyable, if imperfect, collection of live and studio tracks that draws on Skynyrd's three CMC International releases of the late '90s: Lyve from Steel Town, Edge of Forever, and Twenty. Inspired performances of '70s favorites like "Sweet Home Alabama," "Free Bird," and "That Smell" (all of which were recorded at a show in Burgettstown, PA, near Pittsburgh on July 15, 1997) demonstrate that in the '90s, lead singer Johnny Van Zant had no problem handling gems his late brother Ronnie Van Zant once belted out. And the studio tracks (which include "Preacher Man," "Tomorrow's Goodbye," and the swamp blues-influenced "Voodoo Lake") point to the fact that while 1999's Edge of Forever and 1997's Twenty aren't in a class with Gimme Back My Bullets, Second Helping, or Street Survivors, they're decent more often than not. Casual listeners would be better off starting out with a collection of Skynyrd's '70s classics, but for hardcore fans, Then and Now isn't a bad CD to have in your collection. [This DualDisc release features a 5.1 surround mix of the album, a live performance video for "Simple Man," artist photos, and CD-ROM content.] Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
