Chicago Transit Authority recorded this double-barrel follow-up to their eponymously titled 1969 debut effort. The contents of Chicago II (1970) underscore the solid foundation of complex jazz changes with heavy electric rock & roll on the first set. The septet also continued their ability to blend the seemingly divergent musical styles into some of the best and most effective pop music of the era. One thing that had changed was the band's name, which was shortened to simply Chicago to avoid any potential litigious situations from the city of Chicago's transportation department -- who claimed the name as proprietary property.

Leave it to Björk to make a concert release that can be treated as part of her regular body of work rather than a side note. While Björk fans have occasionally complained about the amount of repackaging of her albums, Voltaic reaffirms just how important the live aspect is to her music, and provides a couple of different perspectives on it as well.

Description: History rocked and rock made history during a sold-out three-gig stand at Madison Square Garden in late February 2008 when icons Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood performed a concert together for the first time since their all-too-brief days in the legendary Blind Faith in 1969. Whether they will ever team again is unknown. But with Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood: Live From Madison Square Garden, fans everywhere are able to experience the sound and the glory of a performance on that famous stage by two of rock's greatest artists. Whether Clapton blazes away on guitar or Winwood scorches the keys or the two trade guitar licks, the 20-song set is a classic. Among the highlights are the pair performing the entire A-side of 1969's Blind Faith, the only album by the supergroup ("Can't Find My Way Home," "Well Alright," "Presence Of The Lord"); songs from Winwood's stint in Traffic (including "Dear Mr. Fantasy"); Jimi Hendrix numbers ("Changes," "Little Wing," "Voodoo Child"); Clapton favorites ("Forever Man," "After Midnight," "Crossroads") and Winwood's solo "Georgia On My Mind."

somehow is fitting that Fork in the Road arrived in stores a week after President Barack Obama announced his bail-out plan for the American automobile industry: it's Neil Young's one-man campaign to remind everybody what cars used to mean and what they should be again. Neil always has had a soft spot for cars -- he drove a hearse from Toronto to Los Angeles, immortalizing the vehicle in "Long May You Run" -- so this album-length motor manifesto couldn't be called unexpected, nor could its palpable, ever-flowing undercurrent of nostalgia be a surprise for a man who owns a toy train company. Plus, romanticizing the classic years of Detroit is natural!

Willie Nelson never has been known for his consistency, either in style or quality, yet his stint at Lost Highway Records may be his most schizophrenic collection of recordings ever! All this is heard on Lost Highway, which condenses all the records to a 17-track collection that manages to hit the highlights of these uneven records, adding three previously unreleased cuts for good measure.

Rock & roll lifers that they are, Wilco knows the implications of a self-titled album, how any record bearing an eponymous name is bound to be seen as a reintroduction. That's why they puncture Wilco (The Album) with a parenthetical aside, a slyly ironic joke that deflates the notion that Wilco is returning to its roots while signaling that the band is finally lightening up again, a notion reinforced by the llama birthday party on the cover. And, to be fair, "reintroduction" is indeed too strong a term for a band that never went away, they merely spent a decade-and-a-half on a walkabout, consuming anything that came their way, changing their tone and tenor from record to record.

Leave it to Björk to make a live album set that can be treated as part of her regular body of work rather than a side note. While Björk fans have occasionally complained about the amount of repackaging of her albums, Voltaic reaffirms just how important the live aspect is to her music, and provides a couple of different perspectives on it as well. Volta sparked a particularly inspired and lavish tour that, arguably, ended up being bigger than the actual album was, but tapped into the most dramatic, primal, and elegant aspects of Björk's art overall.

January 28, 2005: From the very first notes of Hello I Love You to the climactic The Unknown Soldier to the influential Five to One, this album rocks. I listen to it at least once a day all the way through. My personal favorite is Summer's Almost Gone. This is really the best album for fans that are tired of listening to the band's greatest hits. Go out and buy it!

Despite the negative criticism of the addition of brass and strings to some of 'The Soft Parade' tracks, I think it was a brilliant idea, and also think it's their second-best album (the debut being #1 of course). Sure, in 1969, the concept of brass (and other orchestral instruments) incorporated with rock groups was the order of the day for certain acts - Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Chicago being prime examples. Applied to the Doors, it takes some of the heavy-handedness of Morrison's vocals off in favor of a brighter, snappier arrangement ("Tell All the People", "Touch Me") and even w/o the added instrumentation, the rest of the album is unlike anything the Doors did before....
