It would be an understatement to say that ZAIREEKA, the four-disc, experimental opus from Oklahoma City's resident post-punk geniuses the Flaming Lips, is not your run-of-the-mill release. Each disc has a partial mix of the same eight songs, so the only way to hear the album as intended is by using four different cd-players at once. Yet, as Lips mastermind Wayne Coyne hints at in the liner notes, that makes ZAIREEKA an inherently social event--invite some friends, tell 'em to bring extra boomboxes.

SINATRA IN HOLLYWOOD was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards For Best Album Notes. Frank Sinatra's studio recordings have been collected in comprehensive box sets issued by the various record labels for which he recorded (RCA Victor [when he was a singer in Tommy Dorsey's orchestra], Columbia, Capitol, and Reprise) and there have also been multi-disc collections of his V-Disc recordings and radio shows. That leaves his work in television and film, a more challenging prospect for compilation (at least, legally) since so many different companies are involved.

The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Brent Mydland, Bob Weir. Recorded live at The Knickerbocker Arena, Albany, New York on March 24-26, 1990. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. The Grateful Dead's neverending tour visited countless arenas in the band's 30 years--most of them faceless, sterile hockey rinks that seemed to have all been cut from the same drab cloth. Albany, New York's Knickerbocker Arena was among the sunny exceptions.

All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Distilled from a weeklong series of concerts celebrating the shuttering of Bill Graham's counter-cultural mecca, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN showcases the original five-piece Grateful Dead operating at pretty much peak form. Former keyboardist and John Cage fan Tom Constanten, who lent the group considerable avant-cachet on ANTHEM OF THE SUN and AOXOMOXOA, guests here on a few songs, including wonderfully lysergic versions of "Dark Star" and "St. Stephen."

Editorial reviews 3 stars out of 5 -- [This] captures intimate, occasionally great performances....The selling point on LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA is R.E.M. spelunking through early catalog gems... Rolling Stone 4 stars out of 5 -- What comes across is not just the genuine sense of a band flying by the seat of its collective pants, but also one that's delighting in rediscovering almost forgotten parts of its own past... Q [T]he band's earlier semi-punk instincts ring through and its taste remains impeccable. Paste 4 stars out of 5 -- In 39 tracks over two CDS, the punk-fuelled folk-rock group that had ruled the '80s along with U2 magically reappears. Uncut

Since 2006's Reintarnation chronicled k.d. lang's alt-country beginnings, there was a need for a compilation that focused on her smoky prime, the recordings from Ingénue on, the recordings that turned her into a crossover star. Recollection, available as either a double-disc or a deluxe set that expands that pair with a disc of live recordings and a DVD of music videos, does just that, painting a portrait of lang the modern-day torch singer. In doing so, it repeats a little of Reintarnation, but even those tunes don't quite possess the wild, almost campy retro-swing of lang's early years.

With the dust and the haze of the decades cleared, it's now apparent that Lynyrd Skynyrd in their original configuration were one of the greatest rock bands to come out of the South, or anywhere in America for that matter, and the band's legacy, based around classic songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and the iconic, ever-unwinding "Free Bird," is assured.
