Villa-Lobos was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1887. He started his studies with his father, who taught him musical theory, cello and clarinet. From the very beginning, he rejected the traditional teaching methods used by his father, although he never denied his importance. "With him I went to operas and concerts. He taught me to play clarinet, and made me identify the genre, the style, characteristics and the origin of the pieces of music I heard, and also to recognize immediately the name of the notes through sounds and noises."
Between 1905 and 1912 Villa-Lobos made his famous trips to the north and northeast of the country. Travelling through our varios states, he was impressed by the different folkloric manifestations, the musical instruments, the nursery rhymes, the cantadores and the repentistas. He was influenced by them all. The experience he acquired in these trips resulted in one of his most important works, the Guia Pr?tico (Practical Guide), a collection of folkloric songs devoted to the musical education of children in schools, since he considered those songs "the roots of our nationality".
