Recorded at RCA Studio, Hollywood, California in 1964-65.
This album, which was sadly to be Sam Cooke's last, found him exercising a hard-won creative freedom to fine effect. You can hear it most clearly in the moving, socially relevant ballad "A Change Is Gonna Come." But it doesn't stop there. Cooke dips into the well of country music for a version of the classic "Tennessee Waltz" that is startling in its transformative ability, as he accomplishes a feat that no one but Ray Charles himself was capable of at the time--turning country seamlessly into soul. The lighthearted "Another Saturday Night" paints a detailed portrait of loneliness that's fully charged with humor rather than desperation, showing how Cooke could straddle several emotions at once within the same song. AIN'T THAT GOOD NEWS is the sound of a man at the peak of his powers, flexing all of his musical muscles. It's just a shame that this was to be the soul legend's swan song.

Sam Cooke at the Copa was the disc that convinced me to stop buying conventional CDs. It is inconceivable how a forty year old live recording could sound this good. If you go to the Sam Cooke website (samcooke.com) there are a few reviews and press releases that help to explain it. Restoration producer Jody Klein explained: "We did absolutely everything conceivable to replicate the actual sonic ambience of the Copa and Sam Cooke's performance there." Further in the release it says: In the 5.1 version, the mumuring of the audience, the sound of silverware on china, of ice cubes in highball glasses, is subtly discernable. Sound engineers looked at floor plans of the club and watched the scene from the film Goodfellas that was shot in the Copa just before it closed in order to gauge the space and its acoustic characteristics so as to make the new mix "true" to the room. In this reviewer's opinion, ABKCO should get an award for their work with this disc. This is clearly what is meant by the phrase "above and beyond the call of duty." I only wish other companies took their work as seriously.

For most people the first time they listen to this SACD, they are in shock. It is a great departure from Bon Jovi's sual sound. In every album they have made they have grown in expression and dimension. This album is an even greater growth. Yes, the sound is different, and it takes a little getting used to, but if you really listen to the songs and the way the band portrays them, they are wonderful. They have taken their music and creativity to an all new level. As an avid fan club member, I was even shocked and almost apalled the first time I heard the SACD, but then I realized this was not meant to replace the music we all love, but to expand on it and look at it in a broader spectrum.

Review:
What can be said about this album that hasn't already been said? This is one of those classic, must have albums. With its southern-flavored, blues rock, impromptu jams and heavily loaded set list, this meaty album satisfies. Now, fully realized on SACD, this work from the brothers Allman, really shines.

Review:
Here, Creedence peels off very rocking versions of some of their best songs. Fogerty's growl is completely real and down on the corner, and he plays some truly sizzling guitar leads as well. The band was in great form, with tight rhythm section pumping away and the crowd loving it! My favorite is Tombstone Shadow, but all the versions they do on this night out are first rate. So, grab yer girl, and dig the Traveling Band!

SACD (2) Disc Set 1964-1971
When you're anthologizing the Rolling Stones, one of the first things you must accept is that you're doomed to failure. No one album can possibly tell the story of the band that's explored so many different musical avenues and recorded so many memorable songs. Still, the double-disc best of HOT ROCKS, and this, its sequel, come perilously close. This set wisely doesn't attempt to be comprehensive. Instead, it just picks out various gems from different points in the band's development.

By the time the Rolling Stones began calling themselves the World's Greatest Rock Roll Band in the late '60s, they had already staked out an impressive claim on the title. As the self-consciously dangerous alternative to the bouncy Merseybeat of the....
