(6 CD / 6 DVD Set in Stunning DTS 5.1 Surround) The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (keyboards); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel: Marc Benno (guitar); G. Puglese (harmonica); Jerry Scheff (bass instrument); Lonnie Mack, Ray Neopolitan (bass guitar). Recording information: 1967 - 1971. Released during late 2006 in honor of the Doors' 40th anniversary, PERCEPTION is a six-CD/six-DVD box set that not only features all of the legendary Los Angeles rock band's classic albums, but includes rare recordings and video footage on companion bonus discs. Boasting newly remastered sound, the compilation traces the arc of the group's years fronted by the brooding, mercurial Jim Morrison, an undeniably charismatic and compelling performer who boldly announced the arrival of the band on its thrilling first single "Break On Through (To The Other Side)," and later heralded the act's demise on the haunting "Riders on the Storm." In between, the set features other outstanding Doors tracks such as the macabre "People Are Strange," the trippy "Hello, I Love You," the glitter-and-velvet pop tune "Touch Me," and the raucous "Roadhouse Blues," which all showcase Morrison's deep, resonant voice and the rest of the ensemble's tight playing and moody, inventive arrangements. Although many of the rarities will mainly be of interest to Doors diehards (see the unformed "Push Push"), PERCEPTION is an impressively thorough anthology with appeal for anyone intrigued by the proudly rebellious band.

A(DVD VIDEO MUSIC CONCERT) 1967 brought rock music to the surface through an explosion of memorable hit singles that permeated the sonic landscape. The sheer stylistic diversity alone was incredible, and Summer of Love does a terrific job capturing that joyful eclecticism. Bringing together pure pop (“Windy," “Happy Together”); garage rock (“Talk Talk,” “Pushin’ Too Hard”); psychedelia (the Vanilla Fudge version of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” “Somebody to Love”); folk rock (“Darling Be Home Soon,” “Get Together”); soul (“I Was Made to Love Her,” “Reflections”); blues rock (“Wake Me, Shake Me,” “Down on Me” ); and more, this set presents a thoroughly entertaining picture of a radical musical epoch. That most of these performances are still in current rotation on classic rock radio stations is proof enough of their staying power. The third disc is a DVD documentary of the period, hosted by Paul Kantner of the Jefferson Airplane. William Pearl

(THIS IS A DVD VIDEO MUSIC CONCERT PLUS 2 CDS) This is a really good retrospective of this band. The dark and lonely ballads that Karen Carpenter sing take center stage, pushing brother Richard's pop contributions to the background. The album starts strong enough, featuring several of their biggest hits, including "Superstar," "Rainy Days and Mondays," "Goodbye to Love," and "It's Going to Take Some Time." And the album ends with more big hits, such as "Top of the World," "(They Long to Be) Close to You," and "We've Only Just Begun"; even their Klaatu cover, "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft," makes it....
